Parents do not and cannot cause autism spectrum disorder. Although the multiple causes of ASD are not known, it is known that parental behavior before, during and after pregnancy does not cause ASD.

Autism spectrum disorder now affects 1 in 68 children. Boys are nearly 5 times more likely than girls to be diagnosed with ASD.

Autism spectrum disorder is a developmental disability that generally appears before the age of 3.

Autism spectrum disorder is one of the fastest-growing developmental disorders in the United States. ASD is more common than childhood cancer, diabetes and AIDS combined.

Leo Kanner of the Johns Hopkins Hospital first used autism in its modern sense when he introduced the label early infantile autism in 1943.

The term stems from the Greek word autos meaning “self”, autism literally means “alone”.

Being nonverbal at age 4 does not mean children with autism spectrum disorder will never speak. Research shows that most will learn to use words and nearly half will learn to speak fluently.

Autism spectrum disorder affects all nationalities, all creeds, all religions, all races and both sexes. It doesn’t differentiate or affect only one group or another.

Uncontrollable violent behavior was calmed down

Our Son, Lakshman is a boy whose uncontrollable behavior was once so harmful. He suffered severe Autism and used to bang his head against the wall, threw himself on the floor and screamed violently, also harmed others by hitting and biting them. He was unable to bear the sound of a fan or the glare of lights in the room. Whenever a stranger walks in, he used to scream at them.

We learned that it often happens when kids with Autism have severe symptoms and unable to express their frustration. We took him to the Autism hub at Wellness hub, and though it was difficult initially, their pre-planned activities and therapies that were designed for him through systematic planning had brought a great change in him. His growth graph was always zigzag, but our therapists who tolerated his tantrums, made it happen. He is now good with reading, writing and doing some number work too. We are now working towards making him work independently.

Early intervention helped in overcoming challenges

Early intervention has helped our kid to overcome his inabilities, who is now on par with the other kids. Vardhan is a little boy with special needs and developed very typically until 18 months. All his milestones fell within the normal range, though some milestones on the early end. Once he was administered for knowing the present status of every skill, the intervention was started immediately.

His training at Wellness Hub started with behavior modification to develop attention and liking towards activities. Though it was tough to put him on the track initially, his therapist and we never lost hope and interest in making this work. Initial sessions were continuous crying. Gradually the little one started understanding the purpose of coming to the sessions. He started enjoying it.

Behavioral therapy and speech therapy programs helped him read, write and communicate well. He can now sing rhymes well. He can now narrate small stories and have developed reasoning skills. We, being his parents are now happy with his great progress.

How the School Readiness Program has helped her

Our little girl Naina, whose social skills were too poor to make friends and even to express her discomfort, is now ready to go to school. It is this new School Readiness Program that she got benefitted from.

Naina never maintained proper eye-contact or never returns a smile. She used to repeat certain words like some murmur. She always avoided social interaction, by restricting herself to a small place in the corner and was scared of strangers. Initially, when she started to respond to the therapists, she used to look at them, but not while answering. I remember her waving timidly to them while leaving after the session.

The School readiness program helped our daughter improve her social skills and make friends. Specially designed behavioral therapy and speech therapy added to the improvement. She now communicates her pain, hunger, and happiness and responds to a smile.

Finally, My Son’s Condition made me Smile

Children with ASD may have difficulty in understanding what others say and also in developing language skills. I learned this only after knowing that my son has ASD. Being the mother of a special child, all my worry was if my son would ever be able to respond and talk, like other kids. He had a delay in speech and felt hard to pronounce words. He sometimes used to repeat the words, but most of them were unclear. He used to scream when I used to try teaching him. His therapists told me that it is common that children may act out their frustration through vocal outbursts or other inappropriate behaviours, during such a phase.

Speech therapy at Wellness Hub brought a great change in him. The programs designed by their team of experienced therapists, which were according to his needs, helped him improve his communication and social skills. Now he is able to talk in small words, and form sentences. He also practices giving responses by controlling his repetitive behavior.
